Fleas

Take in consideration how fleas work, they drop off of your pet while they sleep, they wait for a blood meal, and they can wait a long time, once infested it takes some patience and work to get rid of them.

Our flea season is reaching its peak and will continue through October for our pets and us. Fleas are more than an itch. Over the centuries, they have killed hundreds of millions of people and billions of animals. They are Public Health Enemy No. 1 worldwide.

Plague? Most didn't know this was still around

Sometimes we as a people think we are safe from all the deseases from the past, like the plague, so when we open a paper or search on the internet and find articles about a plague, we pay attention, or we should anyway.
So when I find something I think is interesting I will Post it.

Picnickers: Beware of plague-bearing rodentsSummer visitors to rural picnic spots, campgrounds and wilderness areas should take precautions to protect themselves from plague, a disease carried by rodents, State Public Health Officer Dr. Mark Horton has advised."Individuals can greatly reduce their risk of becoming infected with plague by taking simple precautions, including avoiding contact with wild rodents," Horton said. "Do not feed rodents in picnic or campground areas and never handle sick or dead rodents," he said. "Also, leave your pets at home when visiting rural areas."

How Exposed To Insecticide Are My children

This is a rather old article, but it does bring up a good question about flea collars,
Have you ever wondered what the residue on the collar was when you opened the package?  How  exposed will I be if I or my family handle this Flea collar?

Flea Collars May Expose Children To InsecticidesWhen children pet the family dog, are they exposed to flea collar insecticides present in the animal's coat? That's the subject of a novel study by Mississippi researchers described here today at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. The study takes particular note of flea collars with organophosphate insecticides, which also are commonly used on garden and farm plants

When out and about, Be careful

When your out and about, vacation, hunting, walking around or hiking. check your self for fleas and other critters, use precaution, fleas have been known to get caught in women hosery, by the time they get loose they could be at your home.

The next worrisome diseases are tularemia and plague. It is known that fleas have been found to be positive for plague near Siloam Road on the way to Beulah, and there is a rabbit die-off in Pueblo West from tularemia. Both are vector-borne diseases that can cause serious disease in humans and animals. The key is to avoid - and keep your pets away from -sick or dead rabbits, and to keep your dogs and cats free from fleas (plague) and ticks (tularemia). Tularemia also can be spread by biting flies and mosquitoes - all the more reason for everyone to consistently use DEET bug spray this season.

Fleas And Desease

More people have died from a bacterium spred from fleas than than wars.

FLEAS AND DISEASEFleas often probe the skin before taking a blood meal. After 30 minutes, lines or clusters of itchy red marks appear. On sensitive persons, bites develop into raised bumps within 24 hours after being bitten.Fleas have been associated with humans and other animals for thousands of years. A bacterium (Yersinia pestis) spread by fleas killed 25 million people, more than a quarter of the European population, in 14 th century Europe. This was the “black plague.” Epidemics also occurred in Egypt, Africa, China, India and even the U.S., before the discovery of antibiotics. All told, perhaps 200 million people have died of plague – more than have died in all the wars in history.

Some more information on Fleas

The more Information you have the more likely you will know how and what to do on the elimination of fleas

IdentificationAdult fleas are about 1/16 to 1/8-inch long, dark reddish-brown, wingless, hard-bodied (difficult to crush between fingers), have three pairs of legs (hind legs enlarged enabling jumping) and are flattened vertically or side to side (bluegill or sunfish-like) allowing easy movement between the hair, fur or feathers of the host. Fleas are excellent jumpers, leaping vertically up to seven inches and horizontally thirteen inches. (An equivalent hop for a human would be 250 feet vertically and 450 feet horizontally.) They have piercing-sucking mouthparts and spines on the body projecting backward. Also, there is a row of spines on the face known as a genal comb. Spine I (first outer spine) is shorter than Spine II (next inner spine) in dog fleas. Both spines are about the same length in the cat flea. The rabbit flea has a vertical genal comb with blunt spines. The genal comb is absent in both rat fleas. Eggs are smooth, oval and white. Larvae are 1/4-inch long, slender, straw-colored, brown headed, wormlike, bristly-haired creatures (13 body segments), that are legless, have chewing mouthparts, are active, and avoid light. Pupae are enclosed in silken cocoons covered with particles of debris.

Look at this lovely creature

Can you belive something so ugly, and only 1/8 inch long could bring so much misery to you, your family, and pets. well it certainly can.

FleasSIZE: 1/8 inch (3mm)COLOR: Very darkDESCRIPTION: Adult fleas are about 1/8 inch long, wingless, and have three pairs of legs. The hind pair of legs is modified for jumping. Fleas are vertically flat like a fish, and can move easily through the hair of a host. The immature stage or larval stage of the flea looks like a small white worm with a dark head. Flea eggs are small and white.HABITAT: The cooler and drier fall weather brings a reduction in the number of household fleas. However, house pets usually maintain small flea populations throughout the winter, with the numbers increasing slowly in the spring and exploding in mid-to-late summer.LIFE CYCLE: Female fleas lay eggs loosely in the host's hair (usually a cat or dog). The eggs drop off and hatch into tiny, hairy, worm-like larvae. The larvae are usually found where the animal sleeps, along baseboards, in carpets, or on furniture. Larvae pupate and new adults emerge. The new adults seek a host immediately and must get a blood meal to survive and produce eggs.TYPE OF DAMAGE: They will bite humans-especially when they cannot find their usual animal host or if they become very numerous. Their bite often will leave a small, red, irritated area on humans.CONTROL: The key to successful household flea control is frequent vacuuming of pet bedding and resting areas, treatment of the pet, and careful use of insecticides.INTERESTING FACTS: Fleas are not known to be capable of transmitting infectious diseases in Virginia; however, allergic reactions to flea bites cause the most complaints.

When you see your pet scratching

When you see your pet scratching, take notice, check your pet out, there are signs of fleas,  but you have to look

Is your pet scratching? Can you see tiny brown specks in its fur? Or are there small browny/black insects scurrying about? Do you have some unaccounted for insect bites yourself? A yes to any of these questions could mean unwelcome visitors - FLEAS...Fleas can be a problem even in the best kept homes and on the cleanest pets. But you can control them as long as you treat both your pet and your home. Fleas live and feed on pets. After feeding on your pet's blood the female flea lays eggs which drop into the animal's bedding or favourite resting place. The highest concentration of eggs, larvae and pupae are likely to be in these areas rather than on the animal itself.

Information you should know about Fleas

I just ran across this news Item about Fleas, the information is great concerning you, your family and pets Health.

Flee, fleas: Now's the time to protect pets from pests By Ben Steelman Staff Writer ben.steelman@starnewsonline.com If you're a pet owner, April isn't the cruelest month. Try July or August. The warm, moist months of summer are the height of the flea season. The tiny insects can cause anemia and spread tapeworms to your pet. Dogs and cats can develop skin rashes from the fleas' saliva. Cats can lick themselves raw trying to get the fleas off.Worse, the fleas are evolving, adapting. "The effectiveness has waned for a lot of the older chemical treatments," said Dr. Cynthia Burnett of Burnett Veterinary Hospital in Burgaw.
